The real Roubaix
A bike that deserves the name “Roubaix” because it is built here for here, but apparently this name cannot be used anymore for bicycles. So I wanted to call it “Panache” because that’s what Panache looks like but I was also made aware that this name is already registered. While still thinking of a proper name, here is my personal interpretation of a pure road bike: light and responsive, with a frame built from high-performance Columbus Life steel, a light steel fork with Columbus SL blades, comfortable but fast rolling 700x32c tires with fenders to keep rider and bike dry and clean, direct-mount rim brakes and mechanical transmission to keep weight in check and allow for easy maintenance, leather saddle for comfort on long rides. And all that under 10kg.
I took this bike to Bespoked in Dresden to show that there are high-end alternatives to carbon road bikes with electronic shifting and hydraulic disc brakes. I don’t have anything against riding such bikes. But I do mind the fact that with electronic shifting, hydraulic brakes and completely hidden cables the bike industry is offering more and more proprietary solutions with very little compatibility among component manufacturers. Replacing or repairing components over time becomes more and more difficult. Something that goes against the philosophy of long-lasting steel frames. The all-mechanical approach also keeps the budget in check.
I equipped the bike with a Campagnolo Super Record 2x12 transmission (and Record crankset). It can’t get much higher-end than that. To make space for larger tires and fenders I set the frame up for Paul Components direct-mount center pull brakes for great stopping power (it could have been long reach caliper brakes as well). The Idéale saddle is extremely lightweight using titanium rails. A full list of components follows below.
The frame, fork and stem are painted in-house with a resilient powder coat.
