The Healthy Choice

During the time of confinement to slow down the spread of the Coronavirus, cities around the world are taking advantage of the lower amount of traffic (car traffic that is) to implement larger lanes and more space for bicycles. In Berlin they are even called “Corona Bike Lanes”. Of course, the best way to slow down the spread of the virus is to stay home. But when moving, what better and healthier way to get from A to B is there than the bicycle.

By definition, being on a bike usually leaves more than a meter of space to whoever is trying to overtake you or you are about to overtake. No other vehicle is more hygienic because it is usually only used by one person in fresh air; and I don’t even need to talk about the health benefits of riding a bike.

If you have ever looked for a really good reason to switch from over-crowded subways or the car that is constantly stuck in rush hour traffic jams (not to mention the hunt for a parking spot) to commuting by bicycle, NOW is the moment, there is no more excuse.

Every country has their own way of treating cycling in this time of crisis. In Germany or the UK, government and health officials recommend commuting by bicycle as a strong measure to stop the virus from spreading but also the leisurely use of the bike to improve physical and mental health. In France we will hopefully get there soon...

As a frame builder and avid cyclist, I can only concur to encourage the commute by bike. In France, with about 3 million bicycles sold every year (a number that has been quite stable over the last 20 years), almost every adult able to ride a bike should have one. And if you don’t, below are several great examples of commuter bikes that can perhaps inspire you to upgrade to a custom built commuter bike, made locally in France.

Let’s not give away the space again that cities are adding to encourage the use of the bike after confinement rules will be softened. Get on your bikes, stay healthy, and (yes, this is corny … but true) make the world a better place!
